CROSS-BORDER AUTHORITY BRIEF, May 2026

Why US and EU Markets Don't Trust You Yet, and What to Do About It

The LATAM expertise gap isn't a knowledge problem. It's a credibility architecture problem. Here's how to fix it in 90 days.

The numbers tell one story. The market tells another.

57% of executives plan to increase their M&A activity in Latin America through 2026, according to KPMG's 2025 survey of 400 C-suite dealmakers. 62% say the opportunity in the region has never been greater, a 17-point jump from the same survey in 2023. Confidence that the region is "too risky" has collapsed entirely: 65% of executives now dismiss that narrative outright, up 27 points since 2023. In the first eleven months of 2025, Latin America recorded 2,650 M&A deals totaling nearly $96 billion, fewer transactions than the prior year but 13% higher in total value. Bigger bets, not more bets.

Investor interest in Latin America is at a record high. Deal activity is accelerating, private equity is scaling up, and the global appetite is undeniable.

But here's what nobody tells you: international capital is flowing toward the region, not automatically toward your firm.

US and EU counterparts don't doubt Latin America's potential. They doubt whether your firm can operate at their standard of transparency, regulatory rigor, and institutional trust.

This edition breaks down the five credibility signals that move the needle, and the ones your competitors are already deploying.

5 Credibility Signals Northern Markets Are Actually Looking For

01, Regulatory Fluency Signaling, Not Just Compliance

US and EU buyers aren't just checking boxes. They're reading whether your team speaks their regulatory language. That means proactively demonstrating familiarity with GDPR, SEC disclosure standards, or EMA frameworks before they ask. The firms winning mandates in 2026 show up with a compliance narrative, not just a compliance record.

02, Third-Party Validation Over Self-Promotion

In trust-driven markets, what others say about you is worth ten times what you say about yourself. Strategic media placements in English-language financial press, co-bylined research with recognized institutions, or quotes in trade publications signal legitimacy in ways your own website never will. Build your third-party footprint intentionally.

03, The Bridge Partner Positioning Strategy

The most effective LATAM firms entering Northern markets do so alongside an established local partner, not competing with them. A strategic alliance or co-advisory arrangement with a US or EU-based firm reduces perceived risk and provides instant market credibility. Think of it as regulatory and reputational co-signing.

04, Data-Led Communication, Not Relationship-Led

LATAM relationship culture is a strength regionally. But in US and EU negotiations, deals move on documentation, not rapport, at least initially. Investors expect data. Journalists expect precision. Regulators expect specificity. Matching that expectation in your first touchpoints removes a major friction point before a relationship even begins.

05, Operational Proof Points at the Top of the Funnel

Case studies, governance documents, past transaction summaries, these aren't brochure material. They are the first due diligence Northern markets run on your firm before a meeting is even booked. Firms that have these ready in English, structured for foreign audiences, shorten their deal cycles measurably.

"For LATAM companies expanding north, communications must do more than generate coverage. They must establish authority, demonstrate compliance maturity, and position the company as a serious player in the market."

Your 90-Day Credibility Architecture Checklist

Audit your English-language digital presence. What does a US investor see when they search your firm? A professional LinkedIn, a clean website, and one or two English-language articles are the bare minimum.

Identify one co-publication or media opportunity. A bylined article in a regional English-language outlet positions you as a thought leader before you're ever in a deal room.

Translate two case studies for foreign audiences. Don't just translate the language, translate the context. Explain regulatory environments, deal structures, and outcomes in terms Northern markets recognize.

Map one potential bridge partner per target market. Who in the US or EU space serves clients who could benefit from your LATAM expertise? A referral relationship starts with a conversation, not a formal partnership.

Draft a one-page regulatory fluency brief. A concise document demonstrating familiarity with GDPR, SEC expectations, or relevant EU standards signals preparation, and separates you from 90% of your competitors.

A Final Thought

Latin America is no longer invisible to Northern capital. The question isn't whether US and EU markets want LATAM exposure. It's whether they can find a reason to trust you specifically with their mandate.

Credibility isn't earned in the pitch meeting. It's built in the months and years before it. The firms taking deliberate steps now, the bridge partners, the English-language presence, the regulatory fluency, are the ones closing deals while others are still waiting for callbacks.

Start small. Start visible. Start now.
